U-M IOE alumnus Craig Russell is the recipient of the 2019 Alumni Merit Award for personifying the College of Engineering’s tradition of excellence.
The 2019 recipient of the U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE) Alumni Merit Award is Craig Russell. This singular recognition is awarded each year to a U-M IOE alum who personifies the College of Engineering’s tradition of excellence.
“I’m deeply honored to have been selected from among all of our IOE alums for this prestigious award. I look forward to continuing to help guide IOE towards achieving the department’s vision of excellence in education and research in pursuit of the common good,” Russell said.
Russell earned his bachelor of science degree in industrial and operations engineering at the University of Michigan (U-M) in 1988.
As Global Co-Head of Goldman Sachs Asset Management’s Client Business, Russell has client relationship management responsibility for institutional and retail client assets of $1.2 trillion. He joined Goldman Sachs in 2007 and was named a partner in 2010.
He began his career at JPMorgan as a foreign currency trader in New York and Frankfurt, Germany. He later joined Bankers Trust Company in London and then New York. During his time there, he was the head of the foreign currency trading business in New York and later joined the asset management business.
Russell has spent the past 24 years of his career in the asset management business, including his last 12 years at Goldman Sachs.
He has served on the U-M IOE Advisory Board since 2012 and currently serves as the Chair of the Board’s Fundraising Committee. In this role, he provides alumni leadership for U-M IOE’s fundraising efforts which are focused on providing opportunities for early-career faculty and students pursuing advanced studies.
Russell also serves on the boards of Wellness in the Schools and the Crime Victims Treatment Center in New York. He grew up in Franklin, Michigan, and currently lives in New York City with his wife, Dr. Pamela Jones, who is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst. They have three children: Henry, a 2018 graduate of the University of Michigan, Hannah, a senior at Barnard College in New York City, and Nicholas, a freshman in the Residential College at the University of Michigan.
