U-M IOE hosts its second annual Graduate School Workshop
The workshop is part of a multi-year diversity, equity and inclusion initiative to broaden participation in the field of industrial engineering.
The University of Michigan Industrial and Operations (U-M IOE) Department hosted their second annual Graduate School Workshop on Oct. 1, 2022. The U-M IOE department started this multi-year diversity, equity and inclusion initiative to broaden participation in industrial engineering from underrepresented groups and domestic students.
This year 18 students from various universities and programs national-wide attended the free workshop which included a faculty panel, student panel, a tour of central campus and an off-campus networking event and dinner.
“We are thrilled to host such a diverse group of undergraduate students from all over the country to learn about graduate programs in Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan,” said Siqian Shen, Graduate Recruitment and Admission Committee Chair. “We hope to inspire more domestic students to pursue graduate studies in STEM related fields.”
In the workshop faculty spoke about many research areas including; human factors, optimization and operation research, data analytics, machine learning, data science and quality control.
The department hopes that this initiative will inform students, not just about the programs U-M IOE offers, but about the field of industrial and operations engineering as a whole. There will be a virtual webinar on Nov. 11, 2022 for those who were not able to attend the workshop.
“I strongly believe that the visiting students enjoyed their time at U-M IOE and learned a lot about the program, department and university,” said Albert S. Berahas, Assistant Professor and Event Moderator. “I believe this second iteration of the Graduate School Workshop was a great success!”
