U-M IOE members take home awards from the HFES annual meeting

Last week the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) hosted their 67th Annual Meeting in Washington, DC which took place from Oct. 23-27, 2022. Several University of Michigan Industrial and Operations Engineering (U-M IOE) community members attended and were awarded for their efforts in the field.
The U-M IOE HFES student chapter once again received the Gold HFES Chapter Recognition Award, the highest level of recognition awarded to student chapters. Chapters are recognized for their contributions and achievements across a number of categories, such as recruitment, volunteering, and mentorship. The gold-level award requires activity in at least eight categories with excellence in at least five categories.
U-M IOE Assistant Professor, Oshin Tyagi received the Occupational Ergonomics Technical Group Best Computational Paper award.
U-M IOE Graduate Student Research Assistant and Robotics PhD student, Xiangyu Peng received the Occupational Ergonomics Technical Group Best Experimental Paper award for their paper titled “Effects of Biofeedback on Muscle Effort Reduction when Holding Positions with a Powered Upper Limb Exoskeleton”.
The HFES Occupational Ergonomics Technical Group is concerned with the application of ergonomics data and principles for improving safety, productivity, and quality of work in industry. It concentrates on service and manufacturing processes, operations, and environments, including the design of products that form the basis of industrial employment.
U-M IOE PhD Student Patrik Schuler’s paper titled “Adapting to Imperfect Automation: The Impact of Experience on Dependence Behavior and Response Strategies” won first place in the Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making Technical Group’s Best Student Paper Competition and was one of three finalists in the 2023 Alphonse Chapanis Award.
The HFES Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making Technical Group encourages research on human cognition and decision-making and the application of this knowledge to the design of systems and training programs.
HFES is a not-for-profit organization that provides education, builds connections, and advocates on behalf of the human factors/ergonomics field with chapters worldwide.
