Mark Daskin and other IOE faculty, recognized at IISE conference
U-M IOE faculty members, Professor Mark Daskin, Associate Professor Ruiwei Jiang, and Associate Professor Siqian Shen were recognized with awards and honors by the Institute for Industrial and Systems Engineering (IISE). Daskin recognized with IISE’s highest honor, the Frank and Lillian Gilbreth Industrial Engineering Award.
U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE) faculty members, Professor Mark Daskin, Associate Professor Ruiwei Jiang, and Associate Professor Siqian Shen were recognized with awards and honors by the Institute for Industrial and Systems Engineering (IISE) at the 2021 IISE Annual Conference and Expo in May.
Mark Daskin receives Frank and Lillian Gilbreth Industrial Engineering Award
Mark Daskin, U-M IOE Clyde W. Johnson Collegiate Professor, was recognized with the Frank and Lillian Gilbreth Industrial Engineering Award, which has been awarded annually since 1962.
It is considered the highest and most esteemed honor bestowed by IISE and recognizes those who have distinguished themselves through contributions to the welfare of mankind in the field of industrial engineering.
“I am truly honored by this award,” said Daskin. “I believe it is a reflection of the outstanding faculty, student, and staff colleagues with whom I have worked at Michigan and before that at Northwestern University and the University of Texas. Without their support and friendship and the support of my family, I would not be in the position I am in today.”
Mark Daskin is a former chair of U-M IOE, a fellow and past president of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), an IISE fellow and a member of the National Academy of Engineers (NAE). He received his bachelor’s and PhD from MIT, and completed postgraduate study at Cambridge University.
His primary research focuses on applying operations research techniques to solve problems within transportation, supply chain management and healthcare. Daskin’s previous awards from IISE include the Fred C. Crane Award for Distinguished Service as well as the Institute’s Technical Innovation Award.
Ruiwei Jiang receives Operations Research Teaching Excellence Award
Ruiwei Jiang, U-M IOE associate professor, was selected as the recipient for the annual IISE Operations Research Teaching Excellence Award. The award recognizes a professor who emphasizes excellence in their teaching of operations research (OR).
“I am truly honored to receive this award that recognizes our work on incorporating machine learning and modern computational tools into the IOE 310 course,” Jiang said. “I want to particularly thank the GSI, Haoming Shen, as well as the IOE data analytics and computing help desk, who provided hands-on assistance to students on Python, Google Colaboratory and other computational tools.”
In order to qualify for the teaching excellence award, the candidate must be a member of IISE’s OR division, and their course must be OR-focused and offered as part of an undergraduate program in engineering or management.
Amy Cohn, a current professor in U-M IOE, is a former recipient of this award.
Siqian Shen receives honorable mention for best paper
Siqian Shen, U-M IOE Associate Professor, received an honorable mention for the best paper in the 2020 IISE Transactions Focus Issue on Operations Engineering and Analytics. She shares this recognition with Miao Yu, a former PhD student in U-M IOE who graduated as part of the class of 2020.
Shen and Yu’s paper, entitled “An integrated car-and-ride sharing system for mobilizing heterogeneous travelers with application in underserved communities,” covers research that seeks to find a way of combining carsharing with ridesharing services to improve transportation in underserved communities. Mathematical modeling and design algorithms were utilized to efficiently compute optimal solutions to the complex system necessary to achieve this goal.
“We are truly thankful for this recognition and appreciate all the constructive comments from the IISE editors and review team,” said Shen. “This award confirms the importance of the problem of delivering sufficient transportation resources to underserved populations and the difficulty of doing so. We are glad that Operations Research models and tools can help.”
