Qualifying Process

The purpose of the U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE) qualifying process is to perform a holistic assessment of a student’s performance during the first year of doctoral study and to evaluate the student’s potential for successful completion of the PhD.

Prelim Examinations

The purpose of the preliminary examination is to determine if the student is adequately prepared to pursue doctoral research under the direction of a Dissertation Committee. The examination includes, 1) an evaluation of the student’s academic preparation, 2) evaluation of a detailed dissertation proposal, and 3) an oral examination.
