Professor Denton has co-authored over 100 journal articles, conference proceedings, book chapters, and patents. Previously, he was a Professor at North Carolina State University, a Senior Associate Consultant and Professor at Mayo Clinic, and a Senior Engineer at IBM. Some of his honors and awards include the Canadian Operations Research Society Best Student Paper Award (2000), the Institute of Industrial and System Engineers (IISE) Outstanding Publication Award (2005, 2020), the INFORMS Daniel H. Wagner Prize (2005), the National Science Foundation Career Award (2009), the INFORMS Service Section Best Paper Prize (2010), the Distinguished Mentor Award from the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research (2018), and the Distinguished Educator Award from the Industrial Engineering and Operations Management Society (2017). He is an elected fellow of INFORMS and IISE. Past leadership positions include being Department Chair, Chair of the INFORMS Health Applications Section, Secretary of INFORMS, and President of INFORMS.

Research Interests

Brian Denton’s research interests are data analytics, data-driven optimization, sequential decision-making, and artificial intelligence, with applications to healthcare, manufacturing, and operations management. He is a Professor in the Department of Urology (by courtesy) at Michigan Medicine, a member of the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation at the University of Michigan, and a member of the Cancer Center at the Michigan School of Medicine. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and industry research contracts.
